When conductor David Itkin began his tenure here he solicted comments and ideas, I responded asking him to start on time...he responded saying he would try.....HE IS NOT TRYING HARD ENOUGH ! 8 MINUTES LATE SATURDAY, followed by an 8 minute plea for funds...thats 16 minutes in before I hear the first violin....its hopeless !
Ok....its them not me....I love the symphony and I am responding with my $100 donation as requested by Itkin.
Sometimes there is a pre game lecture...rumors had it that one happened here altho it was pretty much a secret....more info on this would help me.!
This program somewhat out of the order of the norm with an opening symphony, the intermission, the special guest and a semi short finale....it played fine for me to a sold out house with the greatest acoustics on earth in the Ham Hall on UNLV's campus !
Masterworks lll....all Tchaikovsky and how now could this be better ?
Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 6 in B minor "Pathetique....four movements...some were not excited by this...I am always excited by the Beattles and Tchaikovsky.....67 pieces 47 strings, great sound...what the hell do you want ?
Intermission....I don't want that !
At 9:21 our hero Zuill Baily arrives with his 1693 Matteo Gofriller Cello ! Now when and where will you ever hear anything like this again ? Variations on a Rococo Theme, just 20 minutes among the greatest pieces of music of my lifetime.....how can you imagine Tchiakovsky in 1893 writing this for a 1693 cello to be played in Las Vegas in 2009. It was everything advertised and more. Bailey did ten minutes more with the orchestra ...Nocturne for Violoncello and Orchestra....not quite as outstanding as the previous piece.....31 minutes and the Matteo Gofriller was gone. I had a hard time finding any history (personal) on Baily but he is from a musical family from Virginia....the name is Scotish (Zuill0) and whether or not and how he learned is still a secret....obviously he has learned and he even smiles during the performance.
20 minutes more of Tchaikovsky (still not enought for me) Romeo and Juliet Fantasy-Overture.
A hell of an evening for our wonderful orchestra and Virginia friend.
Amazing you can't get a perfect score because you can't start on time....anyway I have to send Itkin my check. 91 A-
