Here is a daily double you can't improve on....nonetheless with this world class orchestra and world class venue...they started 7 minutes late ! I was expecting better class...at least no kids screaming or cell phones poping !
The Hollywood Bowl in Hollywood, California (dah) ....one of the treasures on this earth...everyone but God has played here and the system and venue have been honed to perfection. I visted the on site museum...love museums...it was FREE...it was eductational, historic and vistor free. Good for me because I am a misanthrope but not good for everyone who misses it...staff told me one in a thousand stop ! Gee...I drive 320 miles from Las Vegas and I want as much history as I can get...got it here ! I always feel people are such losers when they miss the arts that are so close ...so available and so opportunistic.
The BOWL, itself a masterpiece with its history, told in the museum, and after 83 years they have everything but their starting time down perfect. Big staff, parking, tickets, shops, food, management and programming all in place to perfection over the decades.
The L A PHILHARMONIC...what another lovely piece of heaven this is...one of the worlds great orchestras and track record to prove it. Leonard Slatkin conductor...3 pieces on August 6 highited by Tchaikovsky's only violin concerto...MY PERSONAL REASON LIVING ! What a piece of composing we have here from the worlds second greatest composer (Lennon-McCartney) ! The notes in their limited number like words are available to all of us...you just need to put them in the right order. In Tchaikovskys case, with the big three ballets and THIS, he rests on top of the list of the worlds great classical composers ! The LA PHIL did nothing to hurt this and with my personal thirst for perfection, technique and sound I was rewarded with this perfect piece of music. The violin soloist...(and this is pretty much a solo piece) not able to play and a FILL IN named in the program...not a problem for me because it was the music I came to hear and ....Nikolaj Znaider new all the notes...a world class player-conductor in his own right, he gave me exactly the sound I knew I would get. This world class violinist helps fill my personal void of "not enough violin players in the world" especially at this level.
13 minutes of TOWER to open the evening...Slatkin gave us some too brief play by play
for this pieces L A premier....after Tchaikovskys 32 minute masterpiece and a way too long 22 minute intermission....we got Sibelius Symphoney NO 2 in D major,Op.43...but by now the bar was too high and I could have been better served with this on another night. Of course after Tchaikovsky there could be no finale !
You could give this evening a perfect score had they started on time ......92 A
Recommend this visit to the world....even my wife enjoyed it !
