BRAVE NEW WORLD

BY ED BRUCE edbrucevegas@yahoo.com

I love the Las Vegas Philharmonic....but the Nevada Ballet Theatre and its 39 year track record is the true treasure in Las Vegas. It is for me anyway !

NBT concluding its season with two performances of three World Premires at UNLV's Ham Hall theatre. Not perfect.... but lots of pluses.

The big thing is late....18 minutes Sunday afternoon before I see a dancer...two intermissions...20 and 23 minutes and you have an hour out of the heart of my life for who knows what reason.

I still love the Ham Hall and always will...one more season (number 40 for NBT)here before they trapse downtown to a new facility that can only be dreamed of being filled.

First and finally after endless waiting time (I actually arrived at 110 for the pre game show...it was late too)............

AN INCANDESECNT START ...I don't know what this was and I didn't particularily like it other than some nice side light...full speed attractive dancers doing spins without cause.

SONG OF THE NIGHTINGALE...Now we are talking...this slice of heaven choreographed by Gail Gilbert with Stravinsky music and beautiful lighting and great costumes...perfectly danced with a lovely story...only 20 minutes (almost too short)
but on the mark with all the elements. The NBT always with a beautiful clean clear well lighted look, never better than this...to be seen to be appreciated and everyone loved it.

CYCLICAL NIGHT...this from the creative mind of NBT artistic director James Canfield and music by Astro Piazzolla....cabaret tango. I always have loved the concertina and violin for tango and we got that and more here. This again with terrific side lighting in cabaret shadows with the dancers in sensous costumes mixing ballet and tango and doing it in world class fashion...this the beauty of the creative arts putting the elements together in a new way. THANK YOU

NBT working ensemble 23 dancers and all on cue with professionalism preparation and teamwork....the continued excellence of the combination of music and dance to time in first class fashion the bottom line here.

I love the Nevada Ballet Theatre...next NBT and Cirque du Soleil's annual A Choreographers' Showcase April 18 and April 25 at Mystere Theatre at Treasure Island 800 392 1999 nevadaballet.org I have seen a bad one of these.

81 B- they cannot escape 18 minutes late...if they could just let me know I could use this time in a positive fashion.
