MERLE HAGGARD

BY ED BRUCE edbrucevegas@yahoo.com

If the arrangements, background, vocals and history for Berdenette Peters were perfect .........the best ever......... THIS WAS CLOSE...WOW !

I have seen Merle Haggard before and if it is like this .......I hope I will see him again..........after Tommy James show at the Cannery East Las Vegas indoor-outdoor theatre I said that that would be my last too loud show........well Haggard had it perfect Saturday night for his standard show.

Started 8 minutes late...3 numbers by his son...3 by an outstanding pair of North Carolina brothers and then a 12 minute intermission and Haggard comes on at 846 for 72 minutes...he did not do my two favorites...MAMA TRIED and IF WE COULD MAKE IT TIL SEPTEMBER...other than that it was perfect..... recommended to the world.. a big crowd took the opportunity !

I always like to do the history and Haggard at 73 certainly has one...easy to see how he could compose "turning 21 in prison doing life without parole"...he was there.
Five wives, lengthy early record with some incarceration to include stealing from a lingerie store, armed robbery, assault and more mostly in his youth. Amazingly overcoming it all to include recent cancer history to become one of the worlds great composer-singers.

When you can write and sing like Paul McCartney, Paul Simon, Neil Sedaka and Gene Pitney you have the total picture...not too many of those around...when you add that great Haggard voice and these perfect arrangements, ........... YOU CAN HEAR THE LYRICS...and get the message...lots of Haggards's standard messages here. Just perfect for 8 pieces which have practiced and rehearsed this to Haggards level of perfect delivery. We all remain so happy to see this perfect recovery from 2004 cancer and remain overjoyed to witness the moment.

We sat in front of two large high definition videos in row seven and enjoyed the closeups and production of the show. The theatre itself is half indoors and half outdoors and on a perfect night the weather not an issue...late start helped too...in June, July and August the outside bleachers here can be a threat...if not cheaper.

The Cannery doing lots of oldies type shows...this among the best...Bobby Vinton on June 12 looks like another no brainer for this flourishing property...Merele Haggard a star that definitely makes money for the casino...his fans drink, eat, gamble and are merry !

88 B+ RECOMMENDED TO THE WORLD
