A VISIT TO FLAGSTAFF

BY JOHN MASTALIR jmastalir@yahoo.com

THE TRIP FROM LAS VEGAS TO FLAGSTAFF WAS REALLY FOR FOOTBALL BUT THERE
WAS SO MUCH MORE TO IT.....FLAGSTAFF TRULY AMONG THE MOST VISITABLE
CITIES ANYWHERE AND THATS STRONG COMING FROM YOUR LAS VEGAS REPORTER.

FOLLOWING MY USUAL RANDOM REACTION TO MY DAY.

SO MUCH TO SEE AND DO AND STARTED AND FINISHED WITH A TRIP TO THE LOWELL OBSERVATORY THIS 100 YEARS AFTER THE DEATH OF PERCIVAL LOWELL....CLEAR SKIES...GREAT STAFF...GREEN ....NICE LECTURES.....1894 THE BIRTH OF THIS....CLYDE TOMBAUGH DISCOVERED PLUTO HERE IN 1930.

LOVE THIS LITTLE BALL PARK

ANYWAY THERE WAS FOOTBALL....... J LAWERENCE WALKUP SKYDOME 10,179 SOLDOUT......GREAT ON PAPER RIVALRY WITH NORTHERN ARIZONA WINNING THE LAST TWO YEARS OVER EASTERN WASHINGTON....NOT THIS TIME.  50-35 EWU

TOP DIVISION TEAMS....EWU 4TH IN THE COUNTRY COMING OFF AN OVERTIME
LOSS TO TOP RANKED NORTH DAKOTA STATE AT HOME....EAGLES LOOKED MAD AND PLAYED MAD AND WELL....22-21 EWU AT HALF AND THE FIRST HALF EXACTLY
AS PREVIEWED.....LOTS OF SPEED.....PASSES AND SCORES.

STILL HATE TOUCHDOWNS AND SAW 12 TOO MANY HERE....JUST ME.

DIFFERENT THE SECOND HALF.

NAU HAS THEIR WONDERFUL LUMBERJACK TRADITIONS OF SLICING WOOD AFTER
SCORES AND CHOPPING WOOD PRE KICKOFF AND MILITARY AERIAL DROPS PRIOR TO KICKOFF AND THE MILITARY PUSHUPS TOTALING THEIR CURRENT SCORE....MUST OF BEEN A REAL LOAD LAST WEEK WITH 73 OVER NEW MEXICO
HIGHLANDS.

ENJOYED THE NO HUDDLE OFFENSE BY BOTH TEAMS IN THE FIRST HALF WITH
LOTS OF QUICK OUTS AND QUICK OVERS AND MOVING THE CHAINS.

BOTH HAD SOPHOMORE QUARTERBACKS....GAGE GUBRUD EWU 35 56 FOR 392 YARS AND NO INTERCEPTIONS...COOPER KUPP 11 CATCHES 111 YARDS.

NAU EQUAL THE FIRST HALF RUNNING PRETTY MUCH THE SAME PLAYBOOK..THEN
IN THE THIRD QUARTER QB CASE COOKUS WAS INJURED AND THE FOLLOWUP LIKE NIGHT AND DAY...DOWN 14 TWICE AND RUNNING THE BALL 3 TIMES IN A ROW.

NAU JUNIOR EMMANUEL BUTLER....A PLAYER TO BUY A TICKET TO SEE...PRO
CERTAINTY AT WIDE RECEIVER 6'4"......15 TOUCHDOWNS LAST YEAR A TREAT THE
FIRST HALF....SECOND HALF HE DISAPPEARED ?

ALWAYS QUESTIONALBE CALLS.....NORTHERN.... SECOND AND GOAL FROM THE TWO
IN THE TIGHT FIRST HALF.....TWO BAD PLAYS AND ON FOURTH DOWN THEY THROW
A JUMP BALL TO THEIR ALL AMERICAN RECEIVER BUTLER IN THE CORNER INTO
TRIPLE COVERAGE....ITS INTERCEPTED AND RETURNED 50 YARDS ?

ALWAYS GOOD TO SEE A SELLOUT IN THIS GLORIOUS LITTLE DOME...NAU HAS
30,000 STUDENTS ON A PALACIAL CAMPUS HILL.....10,179 STARTED BUT THEY
LEFT BY THE THOUSANDS IN EACH SECOND HALF SEQUENCE.

TERRIFIC SETTING TO PLAY IN....DISAPPOINTED THE SECOND HALF WAS NOT
COMPETITIVE.....LOVED THE EWU KICKER JASON DASCALO....WHO KICKED OFF NINE TIMES....ALL OUT OF THE END ZONE...HE IS A JUNIOR

LOVELY EXPERIENCE.....I DO THIS ABOUT ONCE A DECADE....ONLY 248 MILES FROM
LAS VEGAS THREE AND A HALF HOURS.....ALL DOUBLE LANE.

AFTER THE GAME WE WENT BACK TO THE PLANATERUM FOR A COUPLE HOURS
OF VIEWING AND LECTURES....WENT TO BASKIN ROBBINS FOR A BANANA SPLIT
......WENT TO BED....DROVE HOME FOR THE AFTERNOON SYMPHONY.

NOTHING NOT TO LIKE ABOUT THIS DEAL.....GREAT EXPERIENCE....GREAT
TREATMENT FROM NAU STAFF.....HAPPY TO BE ALIVE TO WITNESS.
