World Champions Crawley and Kimzey atop the leaderboard after Day One of 2016 Helldorado Rodeo
LAS VEGAS - With action as hot as the blazing desert sun, day one of the 82nd Helldorado Rodeo, part of Helldorado Days presented by Monster Energy, burned up the Las Vegas Strip Friday, entertaining an enthusiastic crowd of loyal fans.
Rodeo athletes from across the country are competing in this three-day PRCA event, which has been a Las Vegas tradition since 1934. On Friday, the first group of athletes took to the arena, turning in runs and posting times which will have to stand up to their fellow competitors’ on Saturday and Sunday to determine the winners.
Currently sitting atop the saddle bronc riding standings is Wrangler National Finals Rodeo (WNFR) reigning World Champion Jacobs Crawley (Boerne, Texas). Crawley earned 84 points atop Flying U Rodeo Company’s Last Call. Utah’s Allen Boore (Axtell) rode to 83 points, with Canada’s Zeke Thurston (Big Valley, AB) turning in 75.5 points.
Two-time and reigning WNFR World Champion Sage Kimzey (Strong City, Utah), posted 80 points atop Jeepers Creepers for the current lead in bull riding, followed by Kurtis Turner (Washington, Utah) with 79.5 points and Arizona’s Tuston Daye (Lupton) with 73 points.
In bareback riding, Pueblo, Colorado’s, Casey Colletti earned a score of 86 points on Lil Red Hawk. It was the top score of the day, followed by an 84-point ride by Ty Breuer (Mandan, North Dakota) and George Gillespie (Hamilton, Montana) with 83 points.
Blake Knowles’ (Heppner, Oregon) 4.5-second steer wrestling run was the fastest of the afternoon. Behind him are Wyatt Smith (Rexburg, Idaho) with a 5.7-second run and Stetson Jorgenson (Blackfoot, Idaho) who tripped the clock at 6 seconds.
Clint Robinson of Spanish Fork, Utah, not only turned in the best time in tie down roping with 8.8 seconds, he and partner Stetson Childress had the fastest team roping time of 7.4 seconds.
Jackie Ganter (Abilene, Texas) rode to the top of the barrel racing leaderboard in 14.5 seconds. With a run of 14.55 seconds, Mary Jo Camera (Turlock, California) follows Ganter closely and Stephanie Kunz (Willard, Utah) sits in third place with a 14.83-second run.
The Helldorado Rodeo continues Saturday, May 14 at 3 p.m. at the Las Vegas Village, directly across Las Vegas Blvd. from Luxor Hotel & Casino.
