LAS VEGAS YOUTH ORCHESTRAS

BY ED BRUCE edbrucevegas@yahoo.com

An annual event that makes me proud to be a Las Vegan, its the answer to my prayer for more string players and less ball players.

Four youuh string groups playing short programs at the perfect appropriate Sammy Davis Jr. theatre.....Lorenzi park outdoors....Rancho and washington.....cheap.

Vegas student groups...... 10ish thru high school playing in an educational learning situation with great supervision and instruction and really sounding pretty good.

Group 1.... 2 selections 9 minutes

Group 2 ....3 selections 12 minutes

Group 3 ....4 selections 17 minutes

Group 4.....3 selections 18 minutes

.....all short pieces 46 minutes of actual playing squeezed into a 113 minute evening full of thank yous, drawings, promotions, politicians, kids running lose, patrons eating potato chips and playing video games....I suffered through it all to really enjoy the excercise and the music.

The youth symphony had a couple of neat moves....spinning violas and basses along with squeaking the side of the viola....never saw Yo Yo Ma do that but I liked it.

Youth Philharmonic........ excellent with conductor Charles Jackson abandoning the stage and discarding the baton to watch from the wings......like any well coached athletic team you can clearly see if the preparation and plan are in place by watching the team....pleasure to watch Jackson's team.

Yet so many symphonys to be heard so little time.....but I got some in tonight !

There may be hope in world if the parents and kids involved here stay focused.....8 minutes late on a perfect night outdors A- 90
