Las Vegas Locomotives Cut Down Roster to 51 Men for United Football League Regular Season
LAS VEGAS – After two weeks of training camp, the Las Vegas Locomotives (Locos) cut their 70-man roster down to the United Football League (UFL) requirement of 51 players on Thursday, Sept. 8.
Cuts began earlier in the week when quarterback Chad Friehauf, fullback Brian Holley and linebacker Wesley Flagg were released on Tuesday, Sept. 6.
“We had some tough decisions to make,” said Locos Head Coach Jim Fassel, who has been evaluating the players throughout training camp. “All of these guys are talented, so it just came down to who showed the most on the field and who best fit our needs at this time. I’m happy with the guys we have on this roster from top to bottom.”
The Locos came into camp with tremendous depth at wide receiver with ten pass catchers on the roster. They ultimately cut four: Anthony Jackson, Eric Peterman, Kenyada Tatum and veteran Locos player Tab Perry.
Other offensive casualties included running backs J.J. Arrington and P.J. Hill and linemen Ryne Holstrom, Joe Tonga and Adam Tadisch.
Defensively, three cornerbacks were released from the team, including Jameel Dowling, Antonio Smith and Las Vegas native Gerard Lawson. Former UNLV standout linebacker Beau Bell was released along with fellow linebackers Chase Vaughn and Dave Philistin. Defensive lineman Lawrence Wilson was also sent home.
Place kicker Brandon Coutu was also released.
The 2011 Locos team must now focus on preparing for their first game of the season on Saturday, Sept. 17 against the Sacramento Mountain Lions.
