That should get your attention and it does! Urinetown, the Musical!

I heard rumors of this and one of the directors at the Utah Shakespeare festival said at a seminar that he was returning to L A to direct it, peeking my curiosity and lending credibility to the project. So it goes,... here in Las Vegas at the Las Vegas Little Theatre. It is community theatre and they put out a great effort on a big job, the damn thing won a Tony for Mark Hollman who did the music and lyrics.

They have remodeled their theatre and moved it west a couple of doors in Chinatown, Las Vegas, nicer seats (altho small and in the back row their is foot between the backs of the seats and the back wall, nice place to move the row back and give me a foot more legroom...why does this stuff get my attention ?) new carpet, nice lobby, tech booth, small music stage, balcony (altho the short ceiling makes it tough and tough for lighting), it is in central Las Vegas, a nice neighborhood.

Quoting the program (which was good) "What is Urinetown? The question runs thru the hilariously pointed Tony Award-winning musical, which manages to be self-deprecating and terrifyingly relevant at the same time. The musical takes place in a future in which water supplies are controlled by a large, heartless corporation." That's enough, it is worth seeing and some extensive production has gone into this. For a tradionalist like myself who loves Oklahoma, The Music Man and Westside Story it is a real challenge for someone to write new music for plays and be successful, they did here. One of my issues is sound which was not great and with fast pace lyrics sometimes overpowered by the music and touchy techs its inaudible, I know I am missing lots of cute stuff, whose fault is that? To steal the theme here it pissed me off. Really like actors Rob Kastil and Ryan Matasovsky who both projected over the top in key roles....they were well heard to the back row where I sat.
This was a fine effort and deserves attention 85 B+. THANK YOU
