The Kingston Trio second generation,.... sort of....these 3 have some history with the group, 40 or 50 years of Kingston Trio stuff, so its like generation one and a half...whatever. Next to Itzhak Perlman this was the best show of 2008 for me.
Lead Bill Zorn, veteran Bob Grove and Rick Daughtery,.... two great guitars and banjo plus a perfect bass player.... they brought back the folk ballads of the 60's when Bob Shane began the group. Nice body of music here...Tom Dooley, MTA, Tijuana Jail, Where have all the Flowers Gone, Rueven James and California. Boy this show was perfect, ...great sound in the South Pointe Theatre, they started on time, not too loud, you could hear all the terrific lyrics with 4 great string backgrounds, the lighting with behind the head spotlights gave the guys a special glow......and original BOB SHANE shows up from Phoenix to sing Scotch and Soda ...and Tom Dooley....Bob can still sing. Made it a special night for me...Bob does not tour anymore but the group is on the road every week thruout the year.
Bill Zorn has really taken over the group with a big history and some story lines on composers and music history...just the right amount. George Grove and his wonderful banjo give the group a special sound and Rick Daughtery has a perfect voice adding to this great harmony. This was so good my Janet joined me and liked it !!!
This, the second booking for the Kingston trio at the South Point, sold out all three nights and return November 28 29 30, sure hope I am alive to see this again. South Point staff polite, professional, efficient...they make you feel at home...goosh what great simple marketing tools !!
In 1959 at 14 I took a high school science project to the University of South Dakota and during this trip I heard students in the dorms playing Tom Doley and Tijuana Jail...how can I remember this...I do remember too of spending 13 wonderful years at USD, graduating and finding a bride ! Anyway the music here not new to me and that is the way I like it...RAVE ON A+ 100.
