I have been writing about boxing for 25 years in Las Vegas, 44 venues and one more tonight.
Some quick observations !
Nice card, nice venue in Primm Nevada (Buffalo Bill Arena) all the staff were nice and efficient unlike the mood at the MGM. I was pleased to be able to cover the event in a perfect atmosphere !
Gary Shaw Productions had some fine matches and 2000 fans were introduced to some c0mpetitive young boxers.
Rap music rather light....thanks for that....altho some jackoff thought it would wise to whistle in my ear for each pass of each ring girl during every round break....he never missed a round....like this bozo would have a shot with these honies....actually that was the only negative of the card.
I was impressed how professional and hard the HBO staff worked to include Bob Paupa and Max Kellerman...nice pace to the fights after we got to TV.
The game is always the thing and for me with all unknowns any level of competition was possible ! After two knockouts at 66 seconds 154 pounders Alfred Angulo and Richard Guitierrez fought their butts off for five rounds til Angulo scored a TKO....great action thru out with a doubt about the outcome right up til the end...the last round as good as any all year.
Main event Yuriorkis Gamboa now 10-0 a unanomous 99-91, 97-93 and 97-93 call over the game Darling Jimenez 23-3-2. Tons of punches to the head by Gamboa and Jimenez took them all...you don't win fights taking punches but Jimenez gave a hell of an effort and fought back. Not to take it to the top but, this match put Morales-Barrera to mind, they fought that hard, that intense for that long .....a damn good fight with Jimenez at least seeming to have a shot right til the end, he did score a knockdown.
They brought in Michael Buffer to be ring announcer for this...how much could he get ?
First class entertainment....do it again here. 97 A+
